Lucknow Super Giants skipper Krunal Pandya rued poor shot selection after his team suffered a crushing 81-run loss against Mumbai Indians to bow out of IPL 2023.
Mumbai Indians posted 182 for 8 in the allotted 20 overs after their skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first. The 5-time IPL champions were off to a poor start as both their openers departed inside 5 overs with just 38 runs on the board. Cameron Green and Suryakumar Yadav then steadied the ship and took the score past the 100-run mark before Naveen-ul-Haq dismissed both of them in quick succession. Useful cameos from Tilak Varma and Nehal Wadhera then guided the team to a 180-plus total.

In reply, Lucknow Super Giants came off with a disastrous batting display and were all out for a paltry 101 inside 17overs. The Krunal Pandya-led side never really looked in contention to chase down the total as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Barring Marcus Stoinis who scored 40, no other Lucknow batsmen managed to put up any significant resistance with the bat.

Krunal Pandya on the loss:
Speaking after the end of the game, a disappointed Krunal Pandya began by pointing out his dismissal as the turning point in the game. LSG were on 69 for 2 in the 9th over when Pandya departed. And in no time, they were all out for just 101.
He also refused to blame the pitch for the horrendous batting display and said that he and his teammates should have batted better. He also revealed the reason behind axing Quinton de Kock for Kyle Mayers.
“We were in a good position at one stage, but everything started (going wrong) when I played that shot, we should have played better cricket. That shot (his wicket) was not on, I completely take the blame for that.
“The ball was coming nicely on to the bat, we just had to bat better. We didn’t play good cricket after that strategic break. Quinton de Kock is a quality batter, but Mayers has a better record here, so we went ahead (in the playing XI) with him. Their batters bat really well against fast bowlers, so I thought of starting with spin against them,” said Krunal Pandya after the match.
